Questions
How does the free trial work?
Every paid plan is free for your first 30 days, with everything included. You’re only charged once the trial ends, and if you cancel before then, you pay nothing.
How do you count paying customers?
Each month, we count the people who paid you anything that month, across every Stripe account you connect: a subscription renewal, a course, a download, a tip. Someone who pays you twice in a month counts once.
So an annual subscriber counts only in the month they pay. A reader who paid for the year in March isn’t counted again until next March. Free trials, complimentary subscriptions and failed payments don’t count.
What happens when I grow past my plan?
Congratulations first. We’ll email you before anything changes, and nothing switches off mid-month.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and isn’t renewed after that. See the refund and cancellation policy.
Do you give refunds?
Every paid plan starts with 30 days free, so you can be sure before you pay. After that, payments aren’t refunded, but you can cancel anytime and you won’t be charged again. If we ever charge you in error, email support@substoke.com and we’ll put it right.
What does “read-only” mean for my Stripe account?
Stoke’s Stripe app can read payments, customers and subscriptions. It can’t move money, issue refunds or change anything. You approve its permissions on Stripe, and can uninstall it there at any time.
Does Stoke read my email?
No. Stoke asks Google only for permission to send, so it can send the notes you approve. It can’t read, search or delete your mail.
Can I send from something other than Gmail?
Not yet. Stoke sends through Gmail, including Google Workspace accounts on your own domain, so notes come from the address your readers already know.
Use Outlook, Fastmail or another provider? Tell us which one, and we’ll let you know when it’s ready.
Which platforms does Stoke work with?
Stoke works with any platform where your customers pay into your own Stripe account, and Substack is one of them. Some platforms collect payments in their own account and pay you out later. Those platforms don’t share customer details with your Stripe account, so Stoke can’t see those customers.
Do Stoke’s prices include sales tax or VAT?
No. Sales tax or VAT is added to your Stoke plan at checkout, where it applies.
